Net-Zero Energy Homes
The Way All Homes Should Be
Net Zero Energy Homes use less or the same amount of solar energy that they produce. Their main features are as follows:
Airtight, super-insulated building envelope – This is usually achieved by insulating the walls, floor and roofing structures with Polyurethane Spray Foam Insulation and using High-Performance Windows and Doors, all of which prevent air, moisture and temperatures from entering or escaping from the home.
High-efficiency heating and cooling – Installing a high SEER / HSPF, Variable Speed, Multi-Capacity System together with a leak-free, efficient and Zoned Air Delivery System.
Low cost hot water heating – The most effective being a solar thermal water heater enhanced by an insulated, on-demand, efficient delivery system.
Solar electric system – A photovoltaic solar electric system is installed to generate sufficient or more solar electricity than is needed to eliminate the remaining electric load after the above measures have been taken. Included is a bi-directional electric utility meter that allows excess production to be sold to the utility company.
